訪調是服務的基礎每年醫療團前往服務地區Engakura，必定會有的任務之一就是訪問調查，這次主要針對家戶經濟與居住狀況、婦女孕產照護的調查，以及部落傳統助產士的深度訪談。問卷調查不是件易事，雖然英語是坦尚尼亞的官方語言，但部落居民主要講馬賽語，因此訪問過程需要借助翻譯來完成；訪問婦女及助產士時，偶爾會遇到好奇的路人旁觀，但問卷內容涉及婦女生產，就需要就地找個能讓受訪者暢所欲言的地方，從照片紀錄可以看到我們進行訪問的環境之多元！接下來，試著用蒐集到的一些資料讓大家更認識Engakura部落的馬賽族！馬賽人的生活 @ Engaruka部落每戶人家平均有7名成員（一夫一妻的情況下），幾乎都是過著農耕種菜、豢養牲畜自給自足的生活，通常擁有 2 隻牛、 5 隻山羊、 4 隻綿羊、 3 隻雞，以及約 2 公頃的農地，用來種植番茄、高麗菜、黑豆等耐旱植物。基礎設施方面，幾乎所有家庭沒有自來水，由女性負責每日取水，徒步往返約1.5公里的取水點；沒有電力設備也是常見情況，有趣的是，近八成家庭擁有按鍵式手機。問題來了，手機要怎麼充電呢？Engaruka地區的每週四是市場日(Market Day)，除了採買所需用品、販售盛產的作物貼補家用外，也是每週一次幫手機充電的時刻！馬賽人的誕生 @ Engaruka部落今年在婦女孕產調查中發現，有75%是由傳統助產士來接生、高達96%做過產前健康檢查，與我們在2011年的調查相比，前者下降（-18%）、後者成長（+17%），這意味著現代醫學越來越被部落接受和信任，有助降低難產死亡與新生兒夭折率。不過，我們並不是期待傳統助產士立刻被現代醫學取代，事實上傳統助產士是相當重要的保健知識傳播者。越瞭解她們的工作，我們也對她們越加尊敬，在資源匱乏下，還能面對生產的突發狀況、成為婦幼的可靠支持，而且交流時也非常積極提問和學習新觀念。這次，團員們更跑遍了Engaruka地區的四個村落，訪談 24 位傳統助產士，了解整個生產過程以及產後照護的方法，例如他們知道透過按摩來調整胎位、喝牛奶有助增加母奶量等知識，但是也有喝紅茶有助子宮收縮、喝加鹽冷水有助補血等，令我們覺得有趣的傳統觀念。這次家戶和婦女分別蒐集了數量驚人的 144 和 162 份問卷，其中有 100 份是團員若文在當地多待了近一個月隻身完成的。（真的respect!）這些資料不僅讓醫療團未來的計劃有參考基礎，也讓我們從訪問中漸漸描繪出Engaruk部落的族群輪廓，還有因為團隊的涉入，所產生的微小但真實的變化。
